Clinton Pulls Amazing Upset in New Hampshire -- Pundits and Pollsters Humbled

Posted
By: E&P Staff NBC called the GOP race in New Hampshire for John McCain just after 8, but needed until 10:30 to call it for Hillary Clinton.

Barack Obama, contrary to polls, was locked in a close battle with Clinton just after polls closed in New Hampshire. John Edwards trailed badly. When polls closed at 8:00, NBC News, surprisingly, could not project Obama the winner, and he trailed all night.

McCain in raw vote led Romney by about 6% and Hillary led with 3% edge with 70% in. Even before NBC called it, pundits were admitting they'd blown it, and pollsters were humbled.

Exit surveys showed that about 43% of the Democratic vote came from independents.
