By: E&P Staff CNHI News Service has named Niagara Gazette city reporter Denise Jewell the first recipient of the wire's Elite Reporting Program fellowship.
Jewell -- whose work at the Niagara Falls, N.Y., paper has included a series exploring casino gambling and its future in the city -- is the first of 10 Elite reporters to be named this year. Each will spend four weeks on a CNHI News Service national reporting project that will provide multimedia packages for Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. papers.
After completing the fellowship, Elite reporters will return to their newspapers with multimedia equipment and a commitment to share their experience and training. They'll also have access to a writing coach throughout the year and receive a performance bonus. Editors of Elite reporters will be invited to a summer training session in Birmingham, Ala.
The first project is being led by William Ketter, vice president of news at The Eagle-Tribune of North Andover, Mass.
