College Columnist's Threat on President Brings Secret Service Visit

By: (AP) An editor at a Minnesota college newspaper has apologized for a recent editorial in which he referred to killing the president of the United States.

Shane Solomon wrote an editorial about freedom of speech for The Echo student newspaper at Rochester Community and Technical College.

Solomon wrote he'd go so far as "killing the president of the United States" if that's what it took to protect the rights of Americans.

A Secret Service agent showed up at the newspaper after the editorial appeared.

The newspaper's adviser says the paper had considered the comment an "extreme statement, a speculation of a theoretical situation." But he says the Secret Service told them no -- even in those cases it's an issue to investigate.

Solomon apologized in another editorial, saying he never meant it as a threat against the president.
