Colorado Paper Fires Intern for Plagiarism

Posted
By: The Colorado Springs Gazette says it has dismissed an intern after concluding that four of her stories published over the last month contained passages substantially similar or identical to stories first published by The New York Times.

Gazette Editor Jeff Thomas announced the dismissal of college student Hailey Mac Arthur, in an editor's note on the paper's Web site yesterday. She worked at the paper since mid-May.

Thomas wasn't sure which college Mac Arthur attends, and apologized in the editor's note to readers.

The Gazette is owned by Irvine, California-based Freedom Communications Inc., a privately held company that owns 33 daily newspapers
