Hagadone Corp.'s Columbia Basin Herald, Moses Lake, Wash., is among the first paid dailies to adopt Microsoft tags, technology that allows readers with smart phones to scan a 2D bar code printed alongside a story or ad which directs the browser to load supplementary material, providing a more interactive experience for print-edition readers.

As Herald staff writer Lynne Lynch points out, the application and tags are free and available the applications store on an iPhone or online at gettag.mobi.com, though hosting the application involves some Website cost.

Herald readers can expect to see more tags to appear in ads and in its real estate publications, according to Advertising Director Jim McKiernan. The tags also can be placed on inserts and flyers.
