By: E&P Staff In response to widespread interest in its weekend package about how college athletic departments use a vague law to keep public records from being obtained, The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch is offering one-time use to any newspaper that would like to publish the main story and sidebar.
The Dispatch asks only that it be credited for the stories.
Dispatch Managing Editor/News Alan D. Miller encourages newspapers who use the stories to compose their own companion pieces localizing the issue. "The vagueness of the law and the varied interpretations of it present challenges in
every state for all who want to scrutinize the policies and management of public colleges," said Miller. "The more papers that run the story, the more potential exists that someone in Congress will fix the problem."
The stories, about the effects of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, hit on a critical FOI issue for any paper that covers Division-I schools, as well as smaller schools. Editors may copy and paste the stories
here, which include a searchable national database of the 119 Division-I schools.
