Columbus Paper Dispatches 45 From Newsroom

By: E&P Staff The Dispatch in Columbus, Ohio, will lay off 45 newsroom employees early next month, the newspaper announced late Monday.

"These are challenging times for many industries, including the newspaper industry," Publisher and CEO John F. Wolfe said in an unbylined article carried on the Dispatch's Web site.

"We avoided staff reductions as long as possible long after many other news organizations took such action," Wolfe added.

The layoffs will "hasten a restructuring of the newsroom" that will include more focus on local news and sports, plus enterprise reporting an "more robust" online offerings, said Editor Benjamin J. Marrison.

"We will have a smaller but no less dedicated staff working each day to bring our readers the news of central Ohio," Marrison said. "Our mission remains the same: to provide compelling, relevant, timely and accurate reports about this community. We'll be working even harder now to make that happen."
