Column Examines Reasons to Make WSJ.com Free

By: E&P Staff Speculation has been mounting lately over whether Rupert Murdoch will make the Wall Street Journal Online free once he fully takes over the newspaper.

The Wall Street Journal earns roughly $79 a year from each of its nearly 1 million Web subscribers. Estimates report that the paper will bring in more than $65 million this year from WSJ Online subscriptions alone.

A column on BusinessWeek.com examines the various reasons why Murdoch would do such a thing to one of the few successful Web sites that charge for content.
