By: E&P Staff Ellen Goodman is the 2008 recipient of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists' annual Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award, the NSNC announced today.
NSNC President Mike Argento said Goodman will be presented with the award at a June 21 banquet in New Orleans during the organization's 32nd annual conference.
Goodman is the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The Boston Globe and the Washington Post Writers Group syndicate.
Past NSNC lifetime-achievement winners include David Broder, Art Buchwald, Herb Caen, Pete Hamill, Molly Ivins, Steve Lopez, Mary McGrory, Clarence Page, William Raspberry, Richard Reeves, Andy Rooney, and Chuck Stone, among others.
The Ernie Pyle prize is named for the famed Scripps-Howard columnist who was killed on April 18, 1945, while covering World War II. The NSNC observes National Columnists Day each year on that April 18 date.
