By: Dave Astor Art Buchwald will be the 2006 recipient of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists' Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award at the NSNC's conference next summer in Boston.

The 1925-born Buchwald, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982, continues to write a humor column syndicated by Tribune Media Services.

"He's a gentleman who exhibits true humor and humanity," NSNC President Suzette Martinez Standring told E&P, noting that these qualities are not plentiful enough in today's partisan times.

Buchwald is a New York native and U.S. Marines veteran who began his newspaper career on the European edition of the New York Herald Tribune. He has authored more than 30 books.

Previous NSNC lifetime-achievement winners include Pete Hamill, Steve Lopez, Andy Rooney, Chuck Stone, Mary McGrory, Richard Reeves, David Broder, William Raspberry, Molly Ivins, and Herb Caen.
