By: E&P Staff Honolulu Star-Bulletin humor columnist Charles Memminger became a syndicated comic writer for a day, courtesy of "Bizarro" cartoonist Dan Piraro.
Memminger wrote in his Aug. 13 column that he e-mailed some ideas to Piraro, and the King Features Syndicate creator used one of them in his July 11 cartoon.
The cartoon, shown with Memminger's column
here, is titled the "8-Blade Razor of Justice" by "Schtick." It shows a razor blade investigating a whisker, arresting it, and so on -- before executing the hapless hair.
Memminger told E&P today that his "Bizarro" contribution "harkens back to the days of New Yorker cartoons in which a lot of the punchlines were provided to the cartoonist by writers."
The columnist wrote Sunday: "In my Walter Mitty-ish world, one of my dreams was to become a cartoonist published in papers all over the country. I had all the attributes needed to become a successful cartoonist except for one: the ability to actually draw cartoons. ...
"So ... I set off to find a cartoonist who shared my peculiar views of the world. And I found him in Dan Piraro, the award-winning creator of the 'Bizarro' cartoon panels. ... I knew the odds of him looking at my ideas were long, but I figured I'd start at the top and work down."
Memminger concluded: "Now I can say I'm a published cartoonist. Sort of. And I can move on to my next Walter Mitty-ish dream: brain surgery. Now, where's that doctor's e-mail address?"
