By: E&P Staff After 13 years as a reporter, columnist, and editorial page writer with the San Francisco Chronicle, Ken Garcia has joined the staff of The Examiner in San Francisco as a columnist.

Garcia, 48, has received a number of honors for his reporting. Most recently, he was awarded a Best of the West Environmental Reporting citation for a three-part series on Golden Gate Park. He left the Chronicle earlier this year after taking a companywide buyout offer, Chronicle Editor Phil Bronstein confirmed.

Garcia also has worked for the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News and the Los Angeles Times. At the Times, he was part of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for coverage of the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

His new column, which debuts on Dec. 13, will appear every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday in the San Francisco and Peninsula editions of The Examiner.

"We are delighted that Ken is joining The Examiner news team," Examiner Executive Editor Vivienne Sosnowski said in a statement. "I believe both readers and civic leaders will sit up and take notice when he writes."
