By: E&P Staff Washington Post columnist Harold Meyerson will be the keynote speaker at The Newspaper Guild Freedom Award Fund banquet May 3 in Washington, D.C.
At the event, The Newspaper Guild Herbert Block Freedom Award will go to the International Federation of Journalists Safety Fund, the Heywood Broun Award will go to Los Angeles Times reporters Scott Glover and Matt Lait, and the David S. Barr Award will go to student journalists Shahar Smooha and Sarah A. Halper.
Block was an editorial cartoonist who spent much of his career at The Washington Post. Broun was a journalist who founded the American Newspaper Guild in 1933. Barr was The Newspaper Guild's longtime attorney.
Meyerson, who is also editor at large at The American Prospect magazine, will be joined at the event by emcee Bob Edwards of XM Public Radio and "special guest" Shashi Tharoor, under-secretary-general for communications and public information at the United Nations.
