By: E&P Staff Syndicated columnist Kathleen Parker offers in a new column today a frightening, if possibly tongue-in-cheek, prospect -- that in the future, newspapers could be delivered in the virtual world of online gaming.
The Washington Post Writers Group columnist rails against the ones she sees as contributing to the growing negative public perception of newspapers. ?The biggest challenge facing America's struggling newspaper industry may not be the high cost of newsprint or lost ad revenues, but ignorance stoked by drive-by punditry,? she writes. ?Drive-by pundits, to spin off of Rush Limbaugh's ?drive-by media,? are nonjournalists who blame the current news crisis on bias.?
Parker relates that Alex S. Jones, director of Harvard University's Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy, said during a recent meeting that in the future, the news may be delivered via a video game. ?Forget the Internet. Millions of people are already living in computerized parallel universes through games such as The Sims and World of Warcraft. We may have to toss the newspaper on those stoops -- in the virtual world of fake life,? she writes.
