By: E&P Staff Syndicated columnist Leonard Pitts, speaking Monday night at Elon University in North Carolina, called out members of the Right who use Christianity to advance their political agenda, according to a report by The Pendulum, the school's student newspaper.

At the college's McCrary Theatre, Pitts, winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for commentary, was the keynote speaker of an all-day event titled ?Faith, Doubt, and the Media,? hosted by the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, the School of Communications and the Society of Professional Journalists.

?Under the definition formulated by the Christian Right movement, Christian no longer meant just one who follows Christ, but meant one who follows Reagan, Linbaugh, Bush, Gingrich, Coulter, Caldwell, Robertson,? Pitts told the audience, the Pendulum reported. ?It meant he or she who believes in tax cuts for the wealthiest, in the dehumanization of gay people, Muslim people, African American people, poor people, feminist people, Hollywood people, certain members of the judiciary, the French and the media.

?Christianity has allowed itself to be caught by this political movement to the degree that it and the political movement are now synonymous," he added, according to the report. "Anybody who does not agree with the political movement feels they cannot be with Christianity.?
