By: E&P Staff Leonard Pitts Jr., who's usually known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning column, has stepped outside that format to write a lengthy retrospective of the 1968 sanitation strike in Memphis.
It was that strike, of course, that brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Memphis, where he was assassinated on April 4, 1968.
Pitts' Miami Herald piece features interviews with sanitation men -- some retired, some still on the job -- who went on strike to protest racist treatment and horrendous working conditions.
The article is being distributed to other papers via McClatchy-Tribune News Service, which is marketed by Tribune Media Services. Pitts' Miami Herald column is syndicated by TMS.
