Columnist Sticks a Pin in JFK's Camelot Bubble

Posted
By: E&P Staff "Are we done worshipping the Kennedys yet?"

That's the first line of a piece by Providence (R.I.) Journal/Creators Syndicate columnist Froma Harrop, who was commenting on the "gushing" response to Caroline Kennedy and Ted Kennedy endorsing Barack Obama.

(Caroline's New York Times Op-Ed column praising Obama and comparing him to her father John F. Kennedy was distributed by the New York Times Syndicate.)

"Though the Kennedy brand is in steep decline, the wave of conformist opinion still thinks this endorsement is very big," wrote Harrop, adding: "Americans fought a revolution to free themselves from ruling families....Nonetheless, the Kennedys fancy themselves liberal kingmakers, and the media swallow their presumption whole."

The Rhode Island columnist noted that "JFK was indeed a charismatic figure, but the more we learn about his Camelot in Washington, the less perfect it sounds. One might start at the 1960 election, which was stolen with an assist by the mob." (Harrop didn't mention all the times JFK cheated on his wife.)

Harrop's entire column can be seen here.
