By: E&P Staff Copley News Service columnist Lionel Van Deerlin has died at the age of 93.
Van Deerlin was a U.S. Congressman in southern California from 1963 to 1981. After the liberal Democrat lost a reelection bid during the 1980 Reagan landslide, he began writing a column for what is now The San Diego Union-Tribune. He continued the Copley-syndicated feature until shortly before his death this past Saturday.
Earlier in his career, Van Deerlin worked for newspapers such as what is now The Sun of Baltimore and what is now the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
