Columnists Among Supporters of Prize Named for Molly Ivins

Posted
By: E&P Staff As the Texas Observer and Texas Democracy Foundation announce a March 15 deadline for the second-annual "Molly" national journalism prize, it looks like the award's board of advisors has several syndicated people as members.

The prize is named after Molly Ivins, the late journalist whose progressive columns were distributed by Creators Syndicate.

On the advisory board are columnist Connie Schultz of The Plain Dealer of Cleveland and Creators, columnist Ellen Goodman of The Boston Globe and Washington Post Writers Group, editorial cartoonist Ben Sargent of the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman and Universal Press Syndicate, and TV anchor/columnist Dan Rather, who writes for King Features Syndicate. The board also includes a number of non-syndicated people.

The "Molly" -- which carries a $5,000 cash award -- will be presented June 12 in Austin. Goodman and former syndicated columnist Calvin Trillin are honorary co-chairs, and Goodman is scheduled to be the guest speaker.

Ivins herself was presented with the first "Molly" in the fall of 2006.
