By: Dave Astor The National Society of Newspaper Columnists (NSNC) is meeting in New Orleans June 11-13.
Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez will receive the Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award during the event. Among the scheduled speakers on tap are columnists S. Renee Mitchell of The Oregonian in Portland and Bob Welch of The Register-Guard in Eugene, Ore., and Roy Peter Clark and Keith Woods of the Poynter Institute. Other writers will discuss their experiences doing stand-up comedy. And composer/pianist Henry Butler will talk and sing.
One columnist who plans to attend is Crossville (Tenn.) Chronicle's Dorothy Brush, 81, who missed last year's NSNC gathering in Arizona after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.
The conference is being chaired by Sheila Stroup of The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. President of the NSNC (http://www.columnists.com) is Mike Leonard of The Herald-Times in Bloomington, Ind.
