Comic Strip 'Baldo' to Raise Diabetes Awareness

Posted
By: E&P Staff The syndicated comic strip "Baldo" will feature a storyline on diabetes with the aim of raising awareness about the disease among Hispanics.

The comic, created by Carlos Castellanos and former Dallas Morning News journalist Hector Cantu, features a Hispanic teen named Baldo Bermudez. In a storyline that begins Tuesday, Baldo's father Sergio will discover that he has diabetes. Baldo mistakenly believes that his father's concern over his antics are the cause of the condition.

"My wife's stepfather passed away recently with complications from several things, and diabetes was one of the things he was fighting," Cantu told the Morning News. "My mom ... may be in the very early stages. It's something I worry about."

According to Dr. Jane L. Delgado of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, diabetes affects more than 10% of the Hispanic population, and Hispanics are twice as likely as non-Hispanic whites to develop diabetes during their lifetime.

When the strip's storyline concludes on July 10, it will feature the number for the Alliance's Su Familia National Hispanic Family Health Hotline to help readers find additional information.

"Baldo" is distributed by Universal Press Syndicate, and runs in more than 200 newspapers nationally.
