Comics-Dropping Newspapers Satirized in 'Candorville' Strip

Posted
By: E&P Staff Darrin Bell today used his "Candorville" strip to satirize newspapers that don't seem to realize how comics are popular with readers.

In the strip, a "Candorville Courier" exec says: "We're losing readers to the Internet and TV. It's just dang hard for print to compete with other media. People want images, images, images."

He then calls his assistant on the phone. "Jane," he tells her. "We need to save some money. Drop four or five comic strips."

Then the exec resumes talking with the person standing next to his desk: "Anyway, if only there were some way we could compete with other media...."

Today's "Candorville" comic, syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group, can be seen here.
