Violence against journalists in 1999 increased at an alarming rate, reports the Committee
to Protect Journalists in its annual report 'Attacks on the Press in 1999,' released today.
Thirty-four journalists were killed in 1999 as a result of their work, ten more than those
killed in 1998. Ten journalists were killed in Sierra Leone while covering the civil war.
Other countries where journalists were murdered in 1999 were Argentina, Colombia, Lebanon,
Nigeria, Russia, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Yugoslavia.
The number of imprisoned journalists, another barometer of press freedom, decreased to 87
in 1999 from118 in 1998.
The 435-page book reports details on more than 500 cases of journalists fined, assaulted,
imprisoned or killed because of their work. It also reports the state of press freedoms in
more than 120 countries with special reports on Pakistan, Sierra Leone, and Central America.
