Conference Board Help-Wanted Index Down

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Conference Board's Help-Wanted Index fell two points in May to 27 (compared to April). It was at 33 in May a year ago.

Help-wanted advertising dropped in six of the nine regions measured by the organization. The largest declines occurred in East South Central, down 41.1%, Pacific, down 22.7%, and West North Central, down 19.3%.

"While the Leading Economic Indicators are pointing to sustained but slow growth in business activity, the latest readings on want-ad volume suggest that job gains (hovering close to about 120,000 per month) could edge a little lower, perhaps opening up only 100,000 new jobs a month," Ken Goldstein, an economist at the Conference board, said in a statement.

The index measures volume in 51 major newspapers in the United States every month.

The number of job positions advertised online rose slightly, up 0.2%, in May compared to April.
