Converted by Olive, Farifax Archive Now Online

By: E&P Staff Olive Software, Santa Clara, Calif., has provided Australia's Fairfax Media, publisher of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun Herald, with the platform for a 35-year digital archive. Fairfax will use Olive's ActivePaper Archive to transform existing text and microfilm archives into an XML-based format that makes the content available over the Web to anyone, anywhere.

Last spring, Fairfax Media announced it would work with Smedia, Olive's distributor in Australia, to digitize issues from 1955-1990. "As soon as these archives were available, the overwhelmingly positive response from our customers and their requests for even more current material led to plans to add 1991-2001 to the issues available in Olive format," Fairfax Information Services Manager Dean Leith said in a statement.

The archive is an exact digital replica of the newspapers. All stories, photos, and ads are searchable by keyword, with results returned in a digital reproduction of the originally published pages.

For the nearly million-page archive it is bringing online, the Morning Herald offers various subscriptions for individuals, companies, institutions, government and libraries.
