By: E&P Staff Ann Coulter, in a
talk with sympathetic interviewer George Gurley in the New York Observer, once again had death on her mind.
"I've been reluctant to name traitors -- but I've got one for you: Ron Klink, some former Democrat Congressman, is blaming the plot to blow up the Sears Tower on the fact that Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction," she told Gurley in the page-one story for the July 3 Observer. "If this were World War II circumstances, and we had the virtues of that era, Ron Klink would be lined up and shot. THAT'S a traitor."
Klink was a four-term Pennsylvania congressman who was defeated in a run for the Senate in 2000 vesus Rick Santorum. A moderate, Klink took an anti-abortion stance, which many claim contributed to his defeat. In 2004, Klink drew fire from Pennsylvania Democrats for endorsing Republican Senator Arlen Specter for re-election.
Coulter's defenders often claim that she is a "satirist," like Jonathan Swift, and doesn't really mean it when she talks about, say, John Murtha and fragging. Asked in the Observer today if really believes the things she says, Coulter replied, "?Yes, liberals would like to think that?as the entire country turns my way,? she said. ?Let them comfort themselves with that little fantasy."
Coulter, author of "Godless: The Church of Liberalism" and a columnist for Universal Press Syndicate, was asked by Gurley what she would do if she became "emperor" of the United States.
"Deport all liberals," Coulter replied.
She also said liberals "apparently [want] the total destruction of the United States," and that they can't stop attacking her. "They're like my pets," Coulter commented.
The author/columnist said fans of her new book "are treating me like a returning war hero" and that "the entire country [is] turning my way." Approval ratings for President Bush, who Coulter strongly supports, are at about 37%, and support for his handling of the Iraq war even lower.
A big reason for Bush's unpopularity is the war, but Coulter thinks that conflict is "going perfectly well."
Gurley also asked: "Did you once call Arabs 'ragheads'?"
Coulter replied: "Well, you kind of had to be there."
