Journalists covering Japan's natural and nuclear calamities must confront something many of us haven't encountered before - radiation.

Hours before leaving Portland for Tokyo last week, photographer Motoya Nakamura and I received a dosimeter by overnight courier so we could measure radiation exposure and stay safe while moving around Japan. The digital Geiger counter is the size of a compact cell phone and operates on a single AA battery.
