By: Staff Reports National, International Expansion of News Coverage
As newspapers continue to capitalize on their 'local' brands, Cox
Newspapers, the Atlanta-based newspaper group, is bucking the trend
with plans to expand its national and international coverage.
On the national level, Cox is creating Washington-based beats to focus
on nonprofits and demographics. Charles Holmes, a Cox foreign
correspondent, will return to Washington as a national correspondent to
cover the 'Changing Face of America' beat. Rebecca Carr has joined the
Washington bureau's national staff to cover the growing world of
philanthropy.
The newspaper group also will open a West Coast bureau to provide
technology coverage to its 16 daily newspapers. Bob Keefe, deputy
business editor at Cox's Austin American-Statesman, will become
the West Coast correspondent to cover Silicon Valley.
Cox's foreign operations will be managed from the Washington bureau as
it continues to expand. Cox is opening a full-time bureau in Beijing
with Julie Chao as the new Asian correspondent.
Stories filed by Cox correspondents are picked up by the New York Times
News Service for distribution in 650 newspapers. Cox Newspapers
publishes 16 daily newspapers including the Atlanta Journal-
Constitution, the Austin American-Statesman, The Palm
Beach Post, and the Dayton Daily News.
