Cox VP of Circ Jay Campbell to Retire

By: E&P Staff Jay Campbell, vice president of circulation for Cox Newspapers, announced his retirement Thursday. Effective December 2005, Campbell will be replaced by Al Smith, currently vice president of circulation for Cox Ohio Publishing. In his new role, Smith will be responsible for all circulation-related functions of the business.

Additionally, the company announced that Christopher Caneles has been named to the newly created position of chief information officer, effective Nov. 7. Caneles will be responsible for information technology systems and strategic direction for Cox Newspapers.

"Jay's newspaper career, whether in advertising or circulation, has always been about service to customers," Jay Smith, president of Cox Newspapers, said in a statement. "He has taught many of us the value a newspaper derives when it takes good care of its readers and advertisers and it's a lesson for which we will be forever grateful."

Smith has 25 years of circulation experience. He joined Cox Newspapers in 1987 as circulation director of the Dayton Daily News. He was promoted to vice president in 1992 and became vice president of circulation for Cox Ohio Publishing in 1996. Prior to joining Cox, Smith served as assistant circulation director for Knight Ridder publications The State and The Columbia Record from 1978-1987.

Caneles will be joining Cox Newspapers from the McClatchy Co. where he has served as the director of information technology since 1997. Previously he was the director of information systems for The Fresno (Calif.) Bee and director of information systems at the San Francisco Examiner from 1992-1995. He also managed publishing systems and IT operations at The Modesto (Calif.) Bee from 1985-1992.
