By: E&P Staff The Committee to Protect Journalists has released a special report by journalist Abi Wright about the questions which remain unanswered over four years after Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and killed in Karachi, Pakistan. Despite several high-profile arrests CPJ reports that it is still unclear who ordered Pearl's murder and precisely what happened.
The man convicted as mastermind of the crime, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, now on death row, is allegedly being protected by Pakistan?s powerful Inter-Services Intelligence Agency. Saeed has apparently violated prison rules by keeping in contact with the outside world from his prison cell, and has been enmeshed in a slow process of appealing his sentence.
The Pearl family is reportedly frustrated by the slowness of the investigation and want Saeed?s sentence carried out, according to CPJ.
?We are looking for closure,? Judea Pearl told Wright for the coming edition of CPJ?s magazine, Dangerous Assignments. ?We don?t know what happened that last few days and we have not received this information. We have been after (the U.S. State Department and the FBI) for four years to hear one scenario that will match all the clues, and we haven?t received it yet.?
