By: E&P Staff Crescent Media Group, of Spartanburg, S.C., has acquired the Thomaston (Ga.) Times, a 6,000-circlation paper published three times a week, from Heartland Publications, the mergers and acquisitions firm Dirks, Van Essen & Murray announced Wednesday.
In a separate transaction, Crescent acquired the Upson Citizen Weekly, founded three years ago by Debbie Lord-Black, in Thomaston. Crescent said it would combine the two papers with Lord-Black as publisher. The Times will continue as a thrice-weekly paid circulation newspaper while the Citizen Weekly will be converted to a free-distribution shopper
The Santa Fe, N.M.-based M&A firm represented Crescent in both transactions. Terms were not disclosed.
Crescent is owned by Andrew Babb. The new acquisitions will be operated by Babb's Mid-South Management, the owner or operator of 18 papers located mostly in the Southeastern U.S.
