By: E&P Staff The Harvard Crimson has discontinued the series of cartoons drawn by Kathleen E. Breeden, who was
accused of substantially copying several syndicated cartoons.
"I am working closely with the editorial board to institute new policies and strengthen existing ones that will prevent any future occurrence of plagiarism," Crimson President William C. Marra said in a statement.
San Diego Union-Tribune/Copley News Service cartoonist Steve Breen -- one of the creators whose work was allegedly copied -- told the Crimson that Breeden, because she's a student, should be held to a somewhat different standard and given a second chance.
Another allegedly copied creator -- Daryl Cagle of MSNBC.com and Cagle Cartoons -- said even syndicated creators often come up with similar ideas, and that many newspapers at least indirectly encourage cartoonists to think alike.
