Crimson Says Some Cartoons Copied, Some Cartoons Original

Posted
By: E&P Staff Two cartoons by a Harvard Crimson contributor were copied and three were original, according to an editor's note published today by the Crimson.

The note also said that while the Crimson has discontinued Kathleen E. Breeden's weekly editorial cartoon for the rest of the semester, she'll still be allowed to do editorial-page illustrations for the newspaper. And Breeden can reapply for a semester-long cartoonist position in February.

"In an effort to further ensure the integrity of the content that runs in our newspaper," the note added, "the Crimson will now require all contributing columnists and cartoonists to take part in sourcing and citation seminars similar to the ones that Crimson staff writers currently must attend."

Breeden was accused of substantially copying cartoons by creators such as Walt Handelsman of Newsday in Melville, N.Y., and Tribune Media Services; and Steve Breen of The San Diego Union-Tribune and Copley News Service.
