Crossover Episodes for 'Pearls' and 'Stone Soup' Comics

Posted Monday, January 14, 2008 12:00 am

By: E&P Staff At least two comics took a crossover route yesterday.

One of them was "Pearls Before Swine" by Stephan Pastis, who used his United Media strip to do a spoof of the "Slylock Fox and Comics for Kids" feature by Bob Weber Jr. of King Features Syndicate.

Weber told E&P this morning that the spoof was "a very funny parody" of his comic.

Also, "Stone Soup" creator Jan Eliot of Universal Press Syndicate once again did a comic about a book club whose members come from various comics. Pictured in yesterday's strip were female characters from "Stone Soup," "Cathy" by Cathy Guisewite of Universal, "For Better or For Worse" by Lynn Johnston of Universal, "Dilbert" by Scott Adams of United, "Rose is Rose" by Pat Brady and Don Wimmer of United, and "Zits" by Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman of King.

Yesterday's "Pearls Before Swine" episode can be seen here.

The Sunday "Stone Soup" crossover strip is here.

What can a self-driving car teach news publishers about AI? Quite a lot, according to Guy Tasaka. In his September E&P “Tasaka’s Tech Talk” op-ed, he argues that publishers should stop framing AI primarily as a way to cut costs and instead demonstrate how it delivers measurable benefits to readers and advertisers. How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
