By: E&P Staff The Curry County Reporter of Gold Beach, Ore., received three first place
awards at the 2007 Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association Better Newspaper Contest, the paper reported this week.
The award ceremony, which was held in the town of Salem the previous week, also featured the installation of the Reporter?s managing editor, Jim Walker, as the next president of the ONPA.
The paper?s general manager Molly Walker received first place in the Best
Special Section Category for the Reporter?s 2006 Gold Beach Visitor?s Guide. Walker also received first place in the category of Best Coverage of Spot News for her stories on James Kim, a San Franciscan father who died of hypothermia after leaving his wife and two daughters in their trapped car in the Oregon mountains to search for help.
Publisher Joel Summer received first prize for Best Coverage of Business and Economic Issues in recognition of his reporting on the federal forestcounty payment safety net controversy.
Jim Walker will serve as president of the ONPA for the 2007-2008 term. Walker will replace Clark Gallagher of the Hillsboro Argus.
