The New York-based Daily Deal hasn't been around a year yet, but
is already expanding overseas.
The Daily Deal and its Web site, thedailydeal.com, have plans to
open five bureaus over the next two months in San Francisco, Washington,
Houston, London, and Hong Kong. The news bureaus, staffed with a total
of 75 reporters, will generate articles, stories, and content for both
the print and Web editions, the paper says.
The new hires are coming from established news sources. Marci Burstiner,
formerly with TheStreet.com, will join the San Francisco office. The
London office will be staffed by Peter Moreia and Nicola Hobday, both
from Bloomberg News, and Laura Board from FT.com. The Hong Kong office
will be made up of Diane Stormont, previously at Reuters, and Steve
Vines from Eastern Express. The Washington, D.C., office has
hired Lou Whiteman, a reporter from The American Banker. The
Houston office hired Claire Poole from Forbes.
The foreign bureaus may pay off as the daily prepares for distribution
in Chicago and London through PressPoint, the global on-demand newspaper
distribution service. Chicago'sDaily Deal should be available in
early summer; London's later this summer. Current circulation, prior to
PressPoint's distribution plan, is at 20,000, reports the Deal.
The Daily Deal, founded in 1999 as a daily journal targeting
corporate, law, and finance professionals, became its own privately held
company in April 2000. Prior to that, the specialty daily was part of
Wasserstein Perella & Co.'s major publishing initiative, American Lawyer
Media.
