Daily Endorsement Tally: A Good Day for Bush, But Kerry Still Far in the Lead

Posted
By: Greg Mitchell On a rare day this month, President George W. Bush has topped Sen. John Kerry in the number of new newspaper endorsements, while also grabbing today's biggest prize.

Today?s biggie for Bush: the Boston Herald. Kerry picked up the second largest paper endorsing today, The Honolulu Advertiser, but Bush answered with The Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Wash. In all, we added six papers to Bush?s total and three to Kerry's.

In E&P?s exclusive daily endorsement tally, Kerry continues to lead by a wide margin, with 55 papers backing him, compared to 42 for Bush. The democrat also remains far ahead in total circulation of his endorsers, by about a 9-5 margin. (See chart below.)

Added to the Bush column in addition to the Herald and Spokesman-Review: The Advocate in Newark, Ohio, The Record in Stockton, Calif., the Southwest Times Record in Fort Smith, Ark., and The Reporter in Vacaville, Calif.

Other new support for Kerry came from: the Battle Creek (Mich.) Enquirer and the Charleston (W. Va.) Gazette.

Meanwhile, the world continutes to hold its breath while awaiting endorsements from The Columbus Dispatch and Cleveland's Plain Dealer, both in the swingiest of swing states, Ohio.

As we have noted previously, many of the papers endorsing Bush have expressed qualms, but the Boston Herald declared today that it was 'proudly" backing the president. "And while we are in the unusual position of doing so in the face of the candidacy of a native son," it continued, "our choice was not a close call." The paper called Kerry "simply the wrong man, in the wrong place, at the wrong time."

The Honolulu Advertiser, however, called Kerry "sharp on the issues, clear on his stand on difficult matters such as the war in Iraq and resolute on his domestic agenda."

In key swing state West Virginia, the Charleston Gazette took an unusual stance of declaring that "the health-care crisis is by far the most pressing domestic issue." It said that Kerry understand this far better than Bush, recognizing "that the American middle class cannot grow and thrive when many families cannot afford basic health care or college education for their children."

Here our updated chart, with circulation numbers and indication of who the paper backed in 2000, Bush or Gore (if we know it).
