Daily Endorsement Tally: Bush Meets 3 Amigos

Posted
By: E&P Staff President George W. Bush has picked up the editorial backing of three smaller papers, knotting the race for daily newspaper endorsements at 13-13 in his contest with Sen. John Kerry. But E&P's exclusive tally shows that Kerry maintains a 3-1 edge in the circulation of supportive papers. (See chart below.)

Now backing Bush are The Union Leader in Manchester, N.H., the Globe Gazette of Mason City, Iowa, and the Savannah Morning News in Georgia. All three also backed him in 2000.

The conservative Union-Leader, long a factor in New Hampshire primary voting, declared today that while it was "not impressed with the pre-9/11 George Bush," and doesn't think "all his choices since then have been the wisest or best," it still supports the president because he "is doing what he thinks is best for this country out of conviction." Kerry, it claims, says "whatever he thinks will give him the best chance of winning."

The Globe-Gazette said that it "makes no sense to change leadership in the middle of a crisis." The Savannah paper hailed the president as "a steady wartime leader who has not wavered in the face of adversity."

Our current tally, with latest daily circulation numbers, follows. "G" and "B" refer to whether the paper endorsed Gore or Bush in 2000:
