Daily Endorsement Tally: Kerry Gains, But So Does Bush

Posted
By: Greg Mitchell Sen. John Kerry continues to pile up the newspaper endorsements, but in a reversal of past trends it was President Bush who nabbed the larger papers in today's update of E&P's exclusive tally.

While only adding four papers to his total, Bush did win the backing of two big papers, The San Diego Union-Tribune and the San Antonio Express-News. The other additions to the Bush column today are the Carlsbad (N.M.) Current-Argus and The Pantagraph of Bloomington, Ill.

Kerry picked up eight endorsements, all from smaller papers: The Jackson (Tenn.) Sun, the Nevada Appeal in Carson City, The Hawk Eye of Burlington, Iowa, The Free Press in Mankato, Minn., The Daily Reflector in Greenville, N.C., The Argus-Press in Owosso, Mich., and two Oregon papers, The Register-Guard in Eugene and the Mail Tribune in Medford.

Kerry now leads 48-34 in the number of papers that back him. In our updated chart below, we find that Kerry now leads Bush in the circulation of papers backing him by almost 2-1, but just a few days ago the incumbent trailed 5-1 in that category. Kerry's papers have 8.9 million readers while Bush?s clock in at 4.7 million, so far.

In its editorial today, the San Antonio paper said, "The Bush administration is more likely to remain resolute on the war in Iraq than would an administration headed by his opponent. ... The vision of a free democratic Iraq to counter Islamic extremism and dictatorships is worth that resolve."

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, "John Kerry's record of waffling on issues large and small does not instill confidence that he would provide the steady leadership that these uncertain times demand. With George Bush, however, there never is any doubt about where he stands. That is why he merits another four years in the White House."

But the Nevada Appeal countered for Kerry: "(The) cause of fighting global terrorism was mislaid. At home, (President) Bush has consistently favored the rich and powerful. ... Finally, as Nevadans we find it impossible to endorse the president who has decided Yucca Mountain is a scientifically sound repository for the nation's nuclear waste."

Our current tally, with latest daily circulation numbers, follows. "G" and "B" refer to whether the paper endorsed Gore or Bush in 2000.
