By: E&P Staff To handle preprinted inserts for the Daily Sentinel and the numerous weeklies, including a shopper, that it also prints, the Grand Junction, Colo., paper recently upgraded its SLS-1000 inserter with the Muller Martini WinLincs XP packaging line control system.
Providing advanced inserter control, communication and data management for the operator, maintenance technician and data analyst, WinLincs XP allows the Sentinel mailroom to handle sophisticated production plans to ensure reliable delivery of various inserts.
The WinLincs XP architecture is designed to give users better control, reducing downtime and improving accuracy. Relying on the current Microsoft operating platform, the upgraded system is "more resilient and resistant to external attacks," according to the supplier. It also features the Microsoft SQL database, reducing downtime caused by database corruption.
The upgrade "provides the potential for greater reporting functionality for our advertising department," Operations Director Bud Winslow said in a statement, calling the reports "invaluable" owing to inserts' growing share of ad revenue.
In addition to WinLincs XP, the Sentinel also rebuilt parts of the SLS1000, including the collator and conveyor chains, increasing its pseed and durability.
An upgrade for both Muller Martini's SLS1000 and SLS2000, WinLincs XP also can be retrofitted to others' inserters, including 1372, 1472, 2299, 630, 632 machines, according to the company, which reports WinLincs upgrades installed in more than 50 inserters at 28 sites.
