By: E&P Staff Printing of the Daily Times-Call, Longmont, Colo., will move to a $20 million plant equipped with a MAN Roland press and new inserting equipment in 2009. The new, 60,000-square-foot plant will be built in Berthoud.
Dean Lehman, president of Lehman Communications Corp., said growth in printing and other production operations led to the expansion, according to a report in Sunday's Times-Call. The new, 16-unit MAN Roland Uniset 75 is configured in four towers, permitting color printing on every page.
Lehman Communications now prints its Loveland Reporter-Herald, Longmont Times-Call, Lafayette News, Erie Review, Louisville Times and Superior Observer on a nine-unit Goss Urbanite press in Longmont. Its commercial division prints the Denver Business Journal and Northern Colorado Business Report, among other publications.
Pending government approvals, the proposed production site on nine acres owned by the company will have rail access for newsprint delivery.
The move will create more space in the existing Longmont building, allowing the circulation department to move back in, according to Times-Call Publisher Ed Lehman. Circulation had relocated to a nearby address several years ago.
The new plant will have storage for inserts and several months of newsprint, computer-to-plate output, a large packaging department for inserting and bundling, an area for sheetfed printing, and large meeting room for company and community use.
Billy Dashiell of the Norfolk, Va., engineering firm Robert G. Dashiell Jr., P.E., Inc., will design the plant and manage the project. Dashiell specializes in designing newspaper plants, Landmark Engineering, Loveland, Colo., is the project's civil engineer. Local or regional contractors will be asked to bid on the project.
