'Dallas Morning News' Nixes Sex Ads

Posted
By: Mark Fitzgerald Effective Aug. 1, The Dallas Morning News will no longer publish ads for strip clubs, escort services and other adult entertainment.

The News was featured in this week's Editor & Publisher cover story about adult ads as one of several mainstream dailies that accepted advertising from sexually oriented businesses. Bob Mong, News president and editor, said the paper had actually announced the change of policy in an internal July 9 memo. When the E&P feature was being prepared, a News advertising executive did not return a message asking for comment on the paper's adult advertising policy.

"We just decided that advertising for 'gentlemen's clubs' and other places that feature live entertainment of that nature would not be something we would take, and that anything that would be remotely (sexually oriented) wasn't right for us," Mong said.

The ads began running in early June on the sports pages and stirred complaints from both readers and News employees. Mong said the paper has stopped accepting new ads and is only running others through Aug. 1 because of the terms of their short-term contracts.
