By: E&P Staff Belo Corp. and its spin-off A.H. Belo, the parent corporation of The Dallas Morning News, A.H. Belo, are donating their corporate archives to Southern Methodist University Thursday.
In a ceremony scheduled on campus, Belo and A.H. Belo will donate a collection of thousands of documents dating back to Belo's founding in 1842. The archive will be housed at SMU's DeGolyer Library, according to a Morning News article by Lori Stahl.
Faculty and students will be able to study a variety of academic disciplines from journalism to business using the archive, Belo Chairman Robert W. Decherd said.
"As the media industry continues to change, it will be invaluable to have historical resources showing the evolution of a leading corporation and its impact on print and broadcast outlets," SMU President R. Gerald Turner told the Morning News.
The director of the university's libraries, Gillian M. McComb described the donation as "a magnificent trove of primary materials, covering the multi-faceted operations of the oldest continuously operated business in Texas."
Included in the Belo archives are private and business papers of company executives such as G.B. Dealey, E.M. "Ted" Dealey, Joe M. Dealey, James M. Moroney, James M. Moroney Jr., H. Ben Decherd and Robert W. Decherd.
A.H. Belo was spun off from Belo Corp. as a newspaper and Web publishing company in 2008.
