The Dallas Morning News will launch a Spanish-language daily in the fourth quarter of this year for the market's 1.4 million Hispanics, the newspaper announced in a story Friday.
The new paper, whose name is still under review, will cover local and international, business, lifestyle, and sports news, and it will have its own Web site. It will feature mostly original content, along with content from wire services and parent Belo's correspondents in Cuba, South America, and elsewhere. A broadsheet, it will be available on newsstands and by subscription.
Heading the project is
Morning News Vice President and Executive Editor Gilbert Bailon, who is a past president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. Designer Mario Garcia, whose credits include
The Wall Street Journal and
The Philadelphia Inquirer, is working on the product.
The newspaper previously published a weekly Spanish-language lifestyle advertorial magazine that was direct-mailed to 100,000 households -- it was published for the last time in fall 2001.
