Daugherty of 'Palm Beach Post' is Gay Group's Journo of Year

By: E&P Staff Jan Daugherty of the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post will be the inaugural "Journalist of the Year" honored by the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA), the group announced Wednesday.

"Jane Daugherty has devoted her three-decade career to covering the disadvantaged and disenfranchised," NLGJA said of the honor, which will be awarded at its annual convention in Los Angeles Oct. 4. "With relentless precision and passion, she has documented the plight of the elderly in nursing homes; workers exposed to death and amputations in auto parts plants; and, most recently, immigrants enslaved in Florida's orange groves and tomato fields."

All awards will be presented in Los Angeles on Monday evening, October 4, 2004. Television personality Steve Kmetko will emcee the ceremony.

The NLGJA also awarded "Excellence in Journalism Awards" with $500 first prizes in eight categories. The following were named for first prize in their category:

Excellence in Writing Award for News/Feature: John Moore, Denver Post, "Stage of Healing: After Years of Abuse, A Search for Solace."

Excellence in Writing Award for Opinion/Editorial: Derrick Z. Jackson, The Boston Globe, for a series of columns.

NLGJA/Seigenthaler Excellence in Radio Award: Barbara Bernstein, KBOO-FM (Portland, Ore.), WBEZ-FM (Chicago), KPFA-FM (Berkeley, Calif.), "Modern-Day Slavery."

NLGJA/Seigenthaler Excellence in Television Award (Network and Top 5 DMA's): Matt Richman, Joel Bernstein, Bob Simon, Renee Kaplan, Tom Honeysett and Chris Weicher, CBS News "60 Minutes II," "Marry Me!"

NLGJA Excellence in New Media Journalism Award: Eleanor Clift, Newsweek, "Capitol Letter Columns," "Political Passion" and "Mr. Newsom goes to Washington."

NLGJA Excellence in Photojournalism Award: Paul Chinn, Deanne Fitzmaurice, Kim Komenich, Elizabeth Mangelsdorf and John Storey, San Francisco Chronicle, "Gay Marriage."

Sarah Pettit Memorial Award for Excellence in LGBT Media: Laura Kiritsy, Bay Windows (Boston), "Representative Rivera Speaks Out," "Amendments Held at Bay," "Victory in Massachusetts," "A True Beauty" and "Marriage Begins in
Massachusetts."

NLGJA Excellence in HIV/AIDS Coverage Award: Tim Murphy, POZ Magazine, "The Clockwatchers."
