Dave Coverly Reprises 'Speed Bump' Caption Contest

Posted Wednesday, May 3, 2006 12:00 am

By: E&P Staff "Speed Bump" cartoonist Dave Coverly is holding another caption contest.

This year's contest features a cartoon with a police-lineup theme. In the lineup are an alien, a dog, a caveman, a modern-day man, and a clown. A woman looking at the lineup is saying something to a cop, but her dialogue balloon is empty. Readers are being asked to fill the balloon with something interesting and funny.

The deadline is May 14. The winner will see their caption published on comics pages, and receive the original artwork, the cartoon printed on their choice of merchandise, and three signed books.

Coverly held a caption contest last year that generated more than 3,000 entries.

The Creators Syndicate-distributed Coverly is a finalist for this year's Reuben Award as top cartoonist. The winner will be named May 27 at the National Cartoonists Society's meeting in Chicago.

How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
