'Dayton Daily News' Debuts Mixed Martial Arts Blog

By: E&P Staff In an unusual move in newspaper sports coverage, the Dayton Daily News has launched a blog devoted to the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

The blog is written and edited by Daily News MMA beat reporter Dann Stupp. Stupp is also the founder and editor in chief of the blog mmajunkie.com, which is a content partner with Yahoo! Sports.

Stupp made his first blog entry on July 9, which featured coverage of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 100 MMA event in Las Vegas.

"The newspaper, thanks to sports editor Brian Kollars, made a commitment to MMA coverage long before other newspapers even thought about it," Stupp wrote on mmajunkie.com Friday. Stupp encouraged his readers to "send in story ideas, and start discussions in the comments sections. ... With newspapers nationwide trimming budgets and eliminating staff members, MMA coverage needs the support."

Currently the Daily News runs Stupp's "MMA Insider" column every Monday, and features previews and features on fighters before major MMA events. Prior to UFC 100, the Daily News carried features on Ohio natives Mark Coleman and C.B. Dollaway.

MMA is a full-contact sport that combines elements of boxing, wrestling, and martial arts. The sport is divided into nine weight classes, and fights are often made available on pay-per-view TV.
