By: The Daytona Beach News-Journal is going outside the company to hire its new editor.

Pat Rice, 52, is currently the director of content for the newspapers within Freedom Communications' Florida region. He is also a former editor of the Northwest Florida Daily News.

Rice will leave his position with Florida Freedom on April 14 and plans to start at the News-Journal on April 19. He succeeds Don Lindley.

Rice served as Daily News editor from 2004 to 2008 before being promoted to director of content, a role in which he maintained close ties with the paper while also overseeing content generated by The News Herald of Panama City as well as eight weekly newspapers.
