By: E&P Staff A candlelight vigil will be held on Monday Oct. 16 outside the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Washington D.C. to honor slain Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
Democracy, human rights, and journalism organizations will gather from 6:00 to 6:45.
Politkovskaya was killed in her apartment on Oct. 7. As an outspoken journalist reporting on the conflict in Chechnya, many believe she was targeted for her work.
Her colleagues at the newspaper Novaya Gazeta have called on the public to honor her on Oct. 16. The day coincides with the Russian folk belief that on the ninth day after someone's death, the soul leaves the body and is guided to its next destination.
The speakers scheduled to speak include the following: Joyce Barnathan, president of International Center for Journalists, Maureen Greenwood with Amnesty International, and Paula Schriefer with Freedom House.
