D.C. Exhibit to Spotlight Art Wood's Cartoon Collection

Posted
By: E&P Staff An exhibit called "Cartoon America: Highlights from the Art Wood Collection of Cartoon and Caricature" will run from Nov. 2 to Jan. 27 at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

The show will feature 100 pieces of original art by past and present creators -- including editorial cartoonists Rube Goldberg, Bill Mauldin, Thomas Nast, and Pat Oliphant; and comic cartoonists Milton Caniff ("Terry and the Pirates"), George Herriman ("Krazy Kat"), Lynn Johnston ("For Better or For Worse"), Winsor McCay ("Little Nemo in Slumberland"), Charles Schulz ("Peanuts"), and Chic Young ("Blondie").

Wood's collection includes more than 36,000 cartoons and caricatures. A cartoonist himself, Wood originally housed the collection in its own Washington, D.C., gallery from 1995 to 1997. (A lack of sustained funding forced the facility to close.) The collection moved to the Library of Congress in 2003.

A companion book called "Cartoon America: Comic Art in the Library of Congess" is being published in November by Harry N. Abrams Inc. It's edited by curator and comics historian Harry Katz.

The "Cartoon America" exhibit was mentioned on ComicsDC.blogspot.com.
